2018 Spring Fling

Celebration, God-style

by Jackie Clifford

It is interesting to note how many times God’s Word instructs us to be joyful. In the King James version alone, the word “joy” is referenced 165 times.  Along with numerous instructions to live a God-centered life, the familiar text from Ecclesiastes reminds us to take time to laugh and dance. David the Psalmist took this to heart and did so for a lifetime…even during times of weariness and woe.

So why did God feel the need for all the reminders to celebrate? The obvious answer has to do with that whole fallen world thing. You know, when Adam and Eve did us all in with a shiny little Red Delicious and set forth a destiny where temptation, sin, shame and guilt would make godly celebration seem impossible.

For No Boundaries International (NBI), we understand that is often a reality for our friends in the South Robinson community. Singly or in combination, the burdens of human trafficking, poverty, violence, mental illness, drugs and alcohol harden the heart and muddle the mind. So much so that God’s idea of partying heartily is often replaced by a more worldly version where the enemy makes the plans and doles out his most popular party favors—more temptation, more sin and even more shame and guilt.

I remember our first celebration at NBI’s Firehouse Community Center back in 2015. Food, games, crafts—it was all carefully and joyfully planned to celebrate all that God was doing in our little neighborhood. I never mentioned it until now, but what occurred that day was much different than what I had envisioned. In a word, the day was “tentative.” Our friends showed up of course; however, it was as if they had landed on an alien planet. Not sure of what to do or say, they waited for social cues from us volunteers. Personally, I struggled. Trying to elicit a smile, encourage participation or engage in conversation was much harder than any physical labor that went into setting everything up. It was exhausting. For us all, I imagine.

Now, we are launching the fourth year of our biannual community celebrations. A Spring Fling that takes place in the spring, and a Fall Fiesta that takes place, you guessed it, in the fall. And still, they are nowhere near what I imagined prior to that very first one. Instead, they have morphed and grown into exactly what our friends in the community need. According to God’s original design, i.e., celebration done His way. God-style. Where Jesus, the Ultimate Party Planner, shows up and plans a bash where His family can come together to relax, have some fun and share a meal. Share some love. No longer exhausting, it is exhilarating to be part of something godly that honors our community, and more importantly, honors its Designer. For all He is, all He does, and all He makes possible.
